Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve hated advertisements.
They feel like an assault, like someone dumping mental garbage in my backyard. Maybe chalk it up to reading Adbusters magazine as a teenager, but I don’t believe it’s “normal” or “okay” to regularly ingest ads. Whenever possible, I resist.
Here’s how I block most digital ads in my lifeβand you can too.

Facebook (desktop): ad-free thanks to FB Purity (free chrome plug-in)
Facebook (mobile): avoid
Instagram (desktop): ad-free thanks to Adblock Plus
Instagram (mobile): avoid
TikTok (mobile): sometimes infrequent & acceptable, sometimes not
Video
YouTube (desktop): mostly ad-free thanks to Adblock Plus
YouTube (mobile): avoid
Television: pay for ad-free streaming; avoid all live television with ads
Web browsing
Google Chrome (desktop): Adblock PlusΒ (free)
Google Chrome (Android): Adguard private DNS (freeβreally excellent!)
Audio
Spotify: pay for it
Podcasts: fast-forward through ads
Billboards
