[just a draft]
How to Be Free is for young adults ages 17-20 who want to discuss freedom, in its many forms.
One part philosophy, one part practice, this seminar is for anyone getting ready to launch into the world, live independently, and begin creating their own forms of freedom.
How to Be Free is live, online, and not recorded. It’s hosted by me, Blake Boles, with occasional guest speakers.
And the best part? It’s free.

The big idea
Most people want to be free—but what does that actually mean? What makes one person more free than another? How much is within our control? And what can you do, practically speaking, to increase your freedom, both now and in the future?
The format is simple. Each week, we’ll begin with a “kick-off” topic, announced a few days ahead of time so you have a chance to research it. Then we’ll let the conversation flow. Blake will facilitate, keeping things moving and ensuring that everyone has a chance to speak, listen, and participate. (Potential kick-off topics include: affordable housing, FIRE, passports, North Korea, and the nuclear family.)
No matter which flavor of freedom we’re discussing—financial, political, ideological, social, or otherwise—this seminar isn’t about finding the “right answer.” It’s about asking more and better questions: questions you can bring to the dinner table, your journal, and your next big life decision.

About the facilitator
I’ve been working with self-directed teens since 2006: at summer camps, alternative schools, homeschool conferences, and my Unschool Adventures trips.
Facilitating rich, deep, and provocative group conversations is one of my favorite parts of my work, and so many of these discussions end up relating to “freedom” of one kind or another.
More recently, I’ve been working on a new book and interview series, Dirtbag Rich, which asks how adults create lives of high freedom and high purpose (even when they don’t earn much money). I’m putting the final touches on the book right now, making it the perfect time to offer this seminar.
FAQ
How will we meet? — We’ll meet over Zoom. Connect via your phone or laptop.
What if I can’t attend the full two hours? — If you show up, please stay for the first hour. After that, if you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go! But priority will be given to those who can stay the whole time.
Is participation required? — Yes, this is an active discussion. You’ll be expected to pay attention, speak up, and keep your video on. In or out—no lurking allowed!
How firm is the age range? — It’s flexible. If you’re just above or below the range, feel free to register. But the topics are designed for ages 17-20, and language is not policed (beyond basic respect).
Can I join with my friend/class/group? — Yes! If you’d like to join with a friend or as part of a class or other group, you’re welcome to. Just be aware that you’ll receive less personal attention.
Will this promote any specific ideology (political, spiritual, etc)? — Absolutely not! All interpretations of freedom will be considered, and none will receive special treatment.
Do you accept donations? — Hey, I appreciate that. If you’re still living under your parent’s wing, I’ll let you know how they can make a donation to support my time & Zoom fees.
Will this be offered again? — This is a classic Blake Boles “pop-up” offering, unlikely to be repeated. If you’re excited for it, sign up!
